About

My
Story

Born in South Africa during a state of emergency on the cusp of the transition, I came of age in the decade that followed the end of apartheid, in the early days of the new South Africa. I came to my work, against this backdrop and through the experience of living inside systems that rarely function the way they claim to. My work has entailed understanding, explaining and contributing to ideas and practice about closing the gap between what systems claim to be and what they actually do.

That experience became a discipline — two decades of political intelligence practice, thought leadership and scholarly writing, expanding into advisory, coaching and strategy development. In my work I go beneath the surface of things — political systems, institutions, and human lives — to understand what is actually operating there to excavate the structure of constraint to free up the agency to act and make sound decisions.

Nompumelelo Sibalukhulu Runji

I am a political sociologist, scholar-practitioner, transformation coach, published author, moderator and speaker, with two decades of experience working at the intersection of political intelligence, institutional strategy, personal transformation, and communication design.

My work has spanned nineteen countries on four continents — Africa, Asia, Europe and North America — through research, programme management, stakeholder engagement, and advisory services. I have worked in various capacities at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the Institute for Security Studies, and the Sowetan, and consulted for Democracy Works Foundation, the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), Kagiso Trust, and the Commission for Gender Equality, among others. I serve on the Rivonia Circle board and served as a trustee on the Indlulamithi Scenarios board. I have written over three hundred published pieces across South African and international media and lectured political science and security studies at various institutions. I hold an MPhil in Multidisciplinary Human Rights, a BA (Honours) in Political Science, and a BSocSci in Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies, from the University of Pretoria.

I believe that the forces that shape outcomes, constrain options, and determine what is possible almost always lie below what is visible. That conviction runs through everything I do — the way I read power, the way I accompany people through transformation, the way I build strategy, and the way I write.

I have developed proprietary frameworks that I apply across my professional practice: The Critical ThinkAR® Method™, The Refraction Framework™, The Inpowerment Coaching Framework™, The Get Inpowered Programme™, The Strategy Arc Framework™, The Ground-Up Inside-Out Framework™, and The Agency-Expanding Communication Framework™.

I am the author of five books: Analyst, Not Commentator (Subsoil Books, 2026), Emerging from the Underground: A Testimony from the Subsoil (Subsoil Books, 2026); How I Took Back My Power (Tafelberg, 2021); Electoral Systems and Accountability (KMMR Publishing, 2017); and The Democratic Opportunity (NR Research and Analysis, 2014).

The work.
The method.
The person.
